Why, Who and What to Measure When you are trying to Engage Physicians?

Do this, not that when your doctors are walking out the door - Special series for you on Physician Retention, Recruitment and Well-being.

Have you seen the following sequence of events happen?

Most of the time, physician engagement is not measured. And when a leader decides to measure it, they waste so much time trying to figure out how to measure it. And even when it is measured, the results are not shared. This bad cycle of events itself has a negative effect on physician engagement.

If you truly believe that physician engagement is necessary for high-quality patient care and the flourishing of healthcare, then you need to measure it.

Dr. Meese’s chapter in the book answers three fundamental questions about measurement: why measure, how to do it, and who and what to measure?

Katherine A. Meese, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and serves as the director of wellness research at UAB Medicine. Dr. Meese has more than six years of industry experience, which encompasses work in ten countries, on four continents, and includes management for a large academic medical center.
