The Growing Concern for Physician Leaders’ Well-Being

The well-being of every physician leader is an increasing concern overall in healthcare. A physician leader is not only tasked with leading medical teams but also with making integral, critical decisions that directly affect patient care and proper function within the setting of a health institution. On top of this, many still have active clinical responsibilities.  A quick example is a doctor spearheading safety and quality  standards set by MEC.

A physician leader has to bear increasing stress, sometimes burnout, even mental health challenges, as most  struggle to keep up with an ever-demanding job. With the continued increasing complexity of today's healthcare environment, it is clear that a physician leader needs more support in looking after their mental and emotional health.

Quite surprisingly, I have found that with very little effort, and minimal changes, most physician leaders do very well in my coaching because of their innate resilience and they find it easy to relate to another physician who still practices medicine.
